Electricity trading on POLPX during the period from January to November of 2010 on the Day Ahead Market amounted to 6.355 TWh, while on the Commodity Derivatives Market – 54,181 TWh. So total trading volume for electricity during the period mentioned above amounted to 60.536 TWh (increase by 1,656.46% year-to-year) – what composes 42.84 % of electricity production amount in Poland during that period.

The Day Ahead Market (DAM)

During the period of 11 months of 2010 total trading volume on the DAM amounted to 6.355.057 MWh. In comparison to similar period of the year of 2009 the trading volume was higher by 3,533,663 MWh (increase by 125.24 % year-to-year). Average monthly volume during the period mentioned above amounted to 577,732.45 MWh, with minimum value noticed in June – 385,351 MWh and maximum value noticed in October –1,011,046 MWh.

The average volume-weighed price for the period of 11 months of 2010 amounted to 195.23 PLN/MWh and it was higher than the price for similar period of 2009 by 22.14 PLN.

The DAM market in November 2010

Electricity trading volume on the Day Ahead Market in November of 2010 amounted to 966,050 MWh. Total trading volume in November was lower than that in October by 4,45% (1.011.046 MWh in October of 2010). In comparison to similar period of year of 2009 the trading volume increased by 268,29%.

The average volume-weighed price in November of 2010 amounted to 202,93 PLN/MWh (month-to-month increase by +0,44% / +0,88 PLN).

Development of the DAM – the oldest market of the exchange - has been aimed at integration with markets of Scandinavia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and – in future – also Germany, which are our neighboring markets. Not later than on the day of December the 15th 2010 the members of the POLPX and the Scandinavian exchange Nord Pool Spot shall be enabled to trade in electricity on the trans-border 600 MW direct current connection – SwePol (the “Swedish Cable” basing on so-called “Market Coupling” mechanism through the Day Ahead Markets on both exchanges.

The Commodity Derivatives Market (CDM)

Electricity trading volume on the CDM market (including electricity auctions) during 11 months of 2010 amounted to 54,181,360 MWh, while during similar period of the year of 2009 it amounted to 625,112 MWh. Increase of trading on the POLPX CDM presents significant dynamics – 8,567.46%. In comparison with other trading platforms, the forward transactions with electricity delivery on the territory of Poland are being entered into on which, the market organized by the POLPX presents the highest liquidity.

Electricity trading volume on the Commodity Derivatives Market (including electricity auctions) in November of 2010 amounted to 36,440,155 MWh. Total trading volume in November was higher by 378.41%(month-to-month) (7,617,000 MWh in October of 2010).

Electricity auctions on the POLPX

Electricity auctions are one of the forms of quotations on that market. From the very beginning – the first auction took place on the day of August the 5th this tear – such form of trading enjoys high interest of the POLPX members and the brokerage houses clients. The auctions have also met positive opinion of the sector (transparency of rules, easy access for all participants, messages for electricity producers concerning price expectations of the consumers).

During the period from August to November there had place already 38 auctions (6 sale auctions and 32 purchase auctions), and the deadlines were fixed for next 31 auctions. The volume of contracted electricity amounts to 9,334,950 MWh.

The auctions are one of the forms of the public electricity market. They offer measurable  advantages for both parties of the market. They allow the electricity producers (which have been obliged to public sale of electricity since August of 2010) to fulfill the public market requirements in easy and quick manner. And then, owing to the auctions, the consumers may optimize the process of seeking the most advantageous electricity sale offers.
